Card Game Dueling Elements

Okay here is an adventurer’s card game we came up with. We like it so I thought I would share it if anyone out there might like it as well. It sort of came to us after Fallout New Vegas. The way they used playing cards for their in game game. We had a lot of old playing cards some of which were missing cards but we liked the art. The idea is that you have a full deck of 52 cards. You can customize your deck with any cards since most are standard sized and come with many types of art and some have other things printed on them like survival tips or what not. As long as you have a full deck including two jokers and all the face cards and number cards. Since it is a full deck you can still use it for other card games like solitaire if you find yourself out in the woods or stranded. You know what I mean.

In addition to these you will need a set of stopa cards. I have some hand drawn cards that can be printed. These are 5  cards that are used to teach (usually Children) what to do in an emergency situation. Each of these cards has a element assigned to them. The idea is that you draw your cards and use them to attack the appropriate stopa card. Fire against earth, water against fire, air against water, and earth against air. You choose which card you wish to use and the opponent tries to block it with a higher number card of the opposing element. You can increase the attack power of a card by using a face card and adding a complimentary element, but not an opposing element.

suitsSay you play an earth card, you can add another earth card or a water card, but not a fire card or an air card. Also only one card can be added with a face card, but a joker will allow you to add any card together and up to two cards to it.

Example: Your opponent throws down a 6 earth card, you throw down a 10 fire card. They add a queen and add 5 earth card totaling 11. You may throw down a king and a two of air card totaling 12 to block them. FYI aces count a 1.

My home made stopa cards are unique in that I added certain elements such a seasons and directions. The O card has the alchemy symbol of air and represents the season of fall and the direction of west, as well as dusk and the crescent moon. The disaster there is the tornado.  The P card represents water, winter midnight and rain and flooding. The direction is east. The S card is the Spring and dawn. The element is Earth and the disaster is earth quake and south.

stopa1

The A card is spirit. Any element can be played against it. It represents civil uprising and man made disasters. The direction is center. The T card represents fire and Summer. The disaster here is a wild fire and the time of day is high noon. The direction is north. I am a bit of a tarot card fan as far as symbolism.

Alternative house for CASA

Ok, so a friend of mine, who is not a Christian, asked me for an alternative house for the game and scenarios. There is another house I have been toying with that didn’t fit with my system exactly. My system used three primordial beast of land sea and air, with body mind and spirit. A fourth did not work well, but I did have one for fire. Not really from the Bible though. The Phoenix. Beast of fire many used as a symbol of resurrection and Jesus. However didn’t fit with my three fold method or color scheme. (red already being used for body and behemoth)

So here is an unofficial house. Go ahead and use the quiz to get your stats for the game and your color. Red for the fire bird. Yellow for the Thunderbird, and blue for the blue phoenix (ice bird). None of which are Christian exactly. The fire bird I believe is Chinese in origin and the thunderbird is native American. The blue phoenix I don’t know the exact origin except from anime. You probably know them best from the game pokemon the bird trio.

I know hard core Christians wont like me doing this, but I have many non Christian friends, It is everyone’s right to choose for themselves. So come in look around, the place for your eternal soul is your own choice. I wont be throwing anything in your face here. However that being said you should review with an open mind. A closed mind never learns, never grows, and eventually falls flat on their face and can’t accept criticism and is swallowed up by pride. (that is not a religious statement, that is a fact from psychology.)

Bestiary: The Scarecrow

hansrtp.jpgThe scarecrow has been a favorite monster for a long time. It has been portrayed in many forms from batman to the wizard of oz. Taking on many forms. Always a figure human or otherwise dressed in tattered clothes and a cloth face that obscures any true human features to inflict fear on its victims. The traditional scarecrow is a stuffy guy made of straw placed In a garden to scare away flying predators by taking on the appearance of a worse predator.

In Christianity we have a lore of such a creature, Hans Trapp.

Hans Trapp was called the Robber Baron. He was arrested and isolated and in his isolation he lost his humanity and in his resentment for the church he became deeply devoted to satan. This devotion eventually lead to him craving human flesh especially children.
As the legend goes, this was a real man. He was rich and evil and was kicked out of the catholic church. He was exiled into the forest where he preyed on children disguised as a scarecrow complete with straw sticking out of his clothes possibly for warmth. In the legend he catches a boy and is about to eat him when he gets struck by lightning. A punishment from God. However his spirit stays restless and can still be seen stalking children who are not careful disguised as a scarecrow.

He has mostly faded away now, but grew beyond his original legend to become the prime predator. A figure of evil to hunt the most vulnerable of victims. Children.  Sometime for meals devouring human flesh, sometimes as sacrifices for whatever reason to be killed on an alter or ritual sight, sometimes to take virginity and to destroy innocence.

Connected to nature usually a field. The scarecrow will stand in an almost perverted form of the crucifixion. Which is why it makes an excellent monster for Christian lore.

Hans Trapp 5/4/8 ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Mostly popular around Halloween. Featured in several movies including the scarecrow, jeepers creepers, and many many others. Typically week against fire if it a supernatural creature. You know all that straw. If it is a human monster, they are typically vulnerable against any weapon. Except you know it you manage to take one down, don’t just run away and let them regroup like in horror movies.

So what to do to prepare for such a threat. Carry a weapon. A symbol of faith. Memorize a sword scripture and a hymn. Carry a signaling device, like a whistle. Since they mostly hunt at night travel with a friend if you must move about at night.

Adventurer’s Almanac: The Elements

Everyone knows the four elements. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. These are the intricate elements that make up our world. They correspond to the four phases of matter. earthIn the Bible , God works a lot through the elements. He speaks from the burning bush to Moses. Creates strong winds to part the sea. He leads Israel through a pillar of fire and cloud. God has used lightning and storms to demonstrate his power. God is intimately connected, (but not limited to) the elements of nature.

Earth is the solid element. Stable and secure. Everyone knows it as the dirt element. Ground, rock, metal. It is the strong and unmovable. Many include wood and plants into this element as well.

Water is the element of liquid. Fluid and changing and hard to control. water

It can change and move freely. It can take the form of rain, river, mist. It is the next stable element. Somewhere between Earth and Air.

Aairir is the gas element. Mostly associated with wind and oxygen. Free spirited and move wherever it pleases and blows down anything in it’s way.

Lastly is Fire the plasma. Although fire is not exactly a plasma (although fireit can be) The best examples of plasma are the Sun, which is a big ball of plasma and lightning. Dangerous and destructive, but also life giving. Life could not exist without it or in fact any of  the elements.

I have used the alchemy symbols for this because they best demonstrate the elements relationship to each other. That is complimentary and contrary. Those that work together and those that work against each other. You know what I mean. If you mix fire and water what happens. Exactly. Water beats fire. Fire beats earth. Earth beats air. Air beats water.

You pour water on fire it fizzles. Fire can burn earth to ash, but if you add in it’s complimentary element of water, water coats the ground and renders it unburnable. Earth and water are allies. Water even feeds the earth to allow plants to grow.

Air beats water. Air can blow water about even pick it up and fling it, But you add Earth to water and you get denser heavier mud. It become too heave for air to just push around.

The same hold for Air and fire. The compliment each other. Air feeds fire. You add air to fire you get inferno.  It can even overcome water. Drying it and evaporating it. Fire fuels the air cycle. Hot air rises and cold air calls. Fire give off heat and causing air to rise rapidly. Can create strong winds if the fire is hot enough. Earth beats air because earth is heavy for air to move and kick around. It is to o dense, but with enough heat to fuel it air can move anything. Think firenado. If fire can burn earth to ash, no obstacle could stand in it’s way.

You may notice the two symbols below. The star of David is known to be a representation of the four elements combines. You can see it if you look closely. Then there is the Jerusalem’s cross. This is a Christian symbol. Not exactly associated with the four elements, but it can be. It is five crosses in a quincunx pattern. Or an artificial crossroads. used in magic rituals to bind a spell or energy in place. They can be used to represent the four elements with the fifth being that of spirit or God.

Bestiary: Hassy’s Head

hasy.jpgHassy’s Head

This is a local creature legend around my area. I head about it from my brother and cousin. Hassy’s Head was a disembodied head that flew around and attacked people. Said to originate from an old abandoned fridge. It would fly about at night and either kill or suck blood from it’s victims. In all likelihood this is just something they came up with, with no real grounds, but I came across some old Philippine legends that gives it some credence.

Hassy’s head would be a Penanggalan. A sort of female vampire head. A creature that at night would detach it’s head from it’s body and fly about attacking people. It would have entrails dangling from it’s floating head. It would leave bruises and scratches on it’s victims. They would all be bleeding from the mouth. So maybe it has a deadly kiss. They would all have to return to it’s body just before first light. Usually in a barrel or coffin or some similar enclosed container. If it didn’t return to it’s body it would die.  It can’t just hide from the sun either, because it’s entrails would dry out if not reattached to it’s body. Also you could drive it away if you had something sharp or a tree limb. It would be scared it’s entrails would get harmed or tangled.

As a vampire, it probably has the same weaknesses as vampires do. Holy water should burn it, Holy symbols should keep it at bay. Garlic and silver would harm it ask they are blood thinners and antibacterial.

So the legend (I am making for her) she is the victim of a murder. Her body stuffed into an old fridge and abandoned by the killer in the wooded are near the shale pit. Unable to find peace she returns as the undead and flies about at night seeking revenge. Every day she returns to her fridge sanctuary.

Game scenario:

So you and your daughter are going camping. You chose a little place off the beaten path. You have left your car about a half mile away at the ranger station. You are the only one here at your campsite. It is a little clearing near a stream surrounded by woods. You set up your camp with a fire pit, and a tent. They only weapon you brought is (whatever it on your immediate right.) You are having a great time talking and hanging out. Suddenly a storm rolls in. (-1 to body) You had checked the weather and there was no report of one this week. You curse silently under your breath and head towards the tent. As lightning flashes you catch the site of something near the trees. You only saw it for a second, but the sight of it sent a chill down your spine. You push your daughter into the tent and grab a flashlight. You wave the beam toward the trees, but it is gone.

You shake your head and head towards the tent. As your eyes set on it, you see it floating right there by it. In a fit of panic you lunge forward screaming at it. It seems to retreat a few feet, but stops. It glares at you eyes glowing red. Apparently amused.

What do you do? The ranger station is a half mile. You are armed with (Whatever is to your right at the time of reading this) You have to look out for your daughter. It is raining slowing your movements.

Your daughter stats 4/4/4. Your stats can be found here after the quiz.

Bestiary the Cockatrice and Basilisk

cocatrice

Cockatrice: “They hatch cockatrice eggs, and weave the spider’s web. He that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper” Isaiah 59
The cockatrice is a mythical beast, basically a two legged dragon with a rooster’s head and wings. Legend says was born from an egg laid by a chicken and incubated by a toad or snake. Its reputed magical abilities include turning people to stone or killing them with a look or a touch. Refereed to as the death stare of the Cockatrice. It is said that it’s petrification remains after it’s death. The weasel is the only animal that is said to be immune to it’s stare. It is said that the Cockatrice will die immediately from hearing a rooster crow, or to have one look at itself in a mirror. Unlike the chicken the Cockatrice is said to have the ability to fly. It’s size is debated but believed to be about waist high to a human. 7/8/5 ♥♥♥♥

Imagine walking through the forest and running across this thing.

baslisk

Basilisk: This is a creature that is often confused with the Cockatrice. Their origins are very similar and both have the ability to paralyze with their eyes. However the Basilisk does not cause petrification only paralysis. The basilisk is called the king of snakes and is said to hatch from the egg of a serpent and incubated by a chicken. (the reverse of the cockatrice) The basilisk is said to be vulnerable to cockerels and travelers use to carry them with them for protection. Also weasels are the enemy of the basilisk and one way to kill them is to throw a weasel into their lair which can be identified by the surrounding shrubs and grass being scorched and withered by it’s potent venom that will cause instant death if bitten. The Basilisk is said to be either enormous or extremely small. Legends tend to very.

Bestiary Bears

bears

Bears are one of the most common problems when hiking, camping or doing something out doors. Their is a spray you can buy that will repair them and be sure to do your cooking away from your sleeping area and store your food away as well someplace hard for them to reach. If one does wander into your area banging some pots or pans together will frighten them away. Just stay a safe distance away. They sell some repellent spray that is meant to drive them away. Do not climb trees to get away from them. Many can climb up after you and then you are stuck and can’t get away. (especially if it is a drop bear)

One trick you can try if one seems aggressive and you have no pots or loud clangy things. Look as big as possible. If you have a shirt or jacket spread it out behind your head and shoulders. They don’t get the concept of separate clothing and such.  Have a friend sit on your shoulders and wave your arms about. They might decide not to tangle with some weird two headed four armed creature.
The drop bear is a folk lore creature mostly known in Australia. It is a bloodthirsty bear that will drop on unsuspecting prey from the trees. Which is why it has a higher mind level.

You can tell the difference between a grizzly and a black bear by their ears. Grizzly have stubby round ears and protruding shoulders and an upturned snout. Black bear have tall pointed ears and flash shoulders.

Here is a link to Anthony’s audio journal. Their trip to Cathedral lakes in the second half they have an encounter with a determined hungry black bear. Give it a listen. It is kinda funny and scary at the same time. One guy looses his bear-can in the night and the bear manages to get it open. Not so bear proof after all.

I’ve become a little attached to Anthony from listening to his podcast so much on my drive to and from work. He is doing a lot of what I wish I had time (and energy) to get out and do. Maybe I should send him a link and see which house he falls into. Bet it is Behemoth.
